Replacing mulch on a 10 year old playground has got to be one of the most labor intensive jobs you could find. Playgrounds tend to get new mulch every year or two and the new mulch just goes on top of the old stuff, pressing it all down year after year to form a heavy and sticky layer under the mulch. Once the sponginess is lost, everything needs to be replaced.

So eventually you gotta go in and shovel all that old heavy dirt and mulch out to make room for some new stuff. Community service volunteers are cleaning out the lower level of this playground. You can see in the photos that the upper level where the slides are has already been done. Most non-profits can’t afford this type of expense so they call in the Community Service 101 team to do the heavy lifting.
